If your KSEB bill has been climbing every year and you’ve been putting off going solar, this is the guide you need. The PM Surya Ghar Yojana gives homeowners a direct government subsidy of up to ₹78,000 credited straight to your bank account plus the ability to generate free electricity every month.
As of May 2026, over 30 lakh homes across India have already made the switch. Here’s everything you need to know to join them.
What Is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
It’s a Central Government scheme launched in February 2024 to put rooftop solar on one crore Indian homes. For Kerala residents, that means:
- A cash subsidy of up to ₹78,000 deposited directly into your bank account
- Up to 300 units of free electricity every month
- The option to sell surplus power back to KSEB through net metering
The scheme is fully online, handled through pmsuryaghar.gov.in, and KSEB acts as the local implementation partner.
Are You Eligible?
You qualify if:
- You own a home in Kerala with an active KSEB domestic connection
- The electricity account is in your name (renters need a landlord NOC)
- Your roof can accommodate a grid-connected system
- You haven’t previously claimed a central rooftop solar subsidy
- You use an MNRE-registered vendor and ALMM-certified Indian-made panels
Housing societies and apartment complexes can also apply together for a shared rooftop system.
Documents You’ll Need
- Aadhaar card (mobile-linked)
- Recent KSEB electricity bill
- Property ownership proof
- Cancelled cheque or bank passbook
- Passport-size photo
How to Apply – Step by Step
- Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in Select Kerala, choose KSEB as your distribution company, and enter your consumer account number.
- Get feasibility approval KSEB checks whether your local grid can handle solar export. This takes 7–15 working days in urban areas, up to 30 days in rural districts.
- Pick a registered vendor Only choose from the vendor list on the portal. Using an unlisted installer disqualifies you from the subsidy entirely.
- Installation The actual installation takes one or two days. Your vendor handles the paperwork and uploads completion photos to the portal.
- Apply for KSEB net metering A KSEB technician visits to replace your existing meter with a bidirectional net meter. This usually takes 15–30 days.
- Claim your subsidy Upload your commissioning certificate and bank details. The subsidy amount lands in your account within 30 days.
How KSEB Net Metering Works
When your panels produce more than you use typically around midday the surplus flows back to the KSEB grid. At billing time, KSEB charges you only for the difference between what you imported and what you exported.
If your exports exceed imports in a month, your bill is zero and leftover credits carry forward. KSEB settles all banked units annually on 1 April at roughly ₹2.69 – ₹3.00 per unit.
Sizing tip: Kerala receives lower solar irradiance than most of India (4.0–4.5 kWh/m²/day). Design your system to cover about 80–90% of your annual consumption rather than trying to eliminate your bill completely. Oversizing means selling excess units at rates lower than what you pay KSEB to buy.
Application Stuck? Here’s What to Do
Only 22.7% of PM Surya Ghar Yojana applications nationally have converted to completed installations. A pending status doesn’t mean rejection, it usually means a queue. Common reasons:
- KSEB feasibility backlog – Follow up at your local KSEB office after 20 working days
- Unresponsive vendor – Request a vendor change through the portal
- Name mismatch – Ensure your Aadhaar, bank account, and KSEB consumer name are identical
- Net meter delay – Follow up at your KSEB office 4 weeks after applying if no technician has visited
Track your exact stage : Applied → Vendor Assigned → Installation → Commissioning → Subsidy Released – by logging into the portal with your registered mobile number.
Is 2026 the Right Time?
Honestly, yes and here’s why.
The scheme targets one crore homes by FY 2026–27. Once that quota fills, the subsidy may change or stop. Solar system costs are also at their lowest in a decade, and KSEB tariffs keep rising every year. Every month you wait for money left on the table.
If upfront cost is a concern, public sector banks offer collateral-free solar loans at 7–8% interest under the scheme. The monthly EMI for a typical 3 kW installation works out to roughly ₹2,400 about what you’re already paying KSEB. After five years the loan clears, and your electricity is essentially free for the next 20 years.
Quick FAQs
- Can renters apply? Yes, with the landlord’s written NOC and a KSEB connection in your own name.
- Does Kerala offer any extra subsidy on top? Not as of May 2026. The ₹78,000 is the full central government subsidy.
- How long does the whole process take? Between 30 and 90 days from registration to subsidy receipt, depending on your district.
- What if I install more than 3 kW? The subsidy stays capped at ₹78,000 regardless of system size beyond 3 kW.
